Born 1764, New Orleans
Father: Michel Gargare
Mother: Marthe Paquet

Marthe Gargare was the youngest known child of Michel Gargare and Marthe Paquet, baptised at New Orleans in November 1764. Her father died while she was small, and in 1769 her mother married again, to Jacob Hingle, a German from Westerheim. Her mother and stepfather later settled on the Gulf coast at Pascagoula.

In June 1781, at about sixteen, she married Louis Fayard, a native of Deer Island off Biloxi, at the parish church of New Orleans. The Spanish priest, Father Cyrillo de Barcelona, wrote her as "Martha Gargare, legitimate daughter of Miguel Gargare". The couple married by contract, after three banns, and Carlos Ladnier, Daniel Santo, Santiago Dupre and Juan Bautista Olivier stood as witnesses.

She spent her married life on the Biloxi shore, where Louis already held land by 1784. A family history of 1983 lists their children with their baptism entries at New Orleans: Pierre, called Louis; Judith; Jacques; Alexis; Ursin; and Jean Baptiste. Her sister Marie Anne married Jean Ryan of Savannah, Georgia, at Mobile in 1786, and three of Marthe's sons married Ryan daughters, their first cousins.
