Michel Gargare

b. 1728 · New Orleans
Born 1728, New Orleans
Father: Pierre Dargaray
Children include Marthe

Michel Gargare was born at New Orleans and baptised on 12 February 1728, a son of Pierre Dargaray, from Rennes in Brittany, and Gilette Gautier. The name was written Dargaray, Dargare, Dargaret and Gargare, often in the same family's papers. His father was the porter, or keeper, of the New Orleans prison and died in March 1736, when Michel was eight.

In the early 1750s he married Marthe Paquet, a granddaughter of Jean Baptiste Baudrau called Graveline of the Pascagoula River. No entry of the marriage survives. Their children were baptised from 1752 on: Nicolas at New Orleans in July 1752, with Michel's mother Gilette Gautier as godmother; Jean Baptiste at Saint Charles on the German Coast in July 1754; Michel in 1756; Marie Anne in December 1758; Pierre in 1762; and Marthe in 1764.

He died before May 1769, when Marthe Paquet married again at Pointe Coupée as his widow. Two of his daughters carried the family to the Gulf coast. Marthe married Louis Fayard of Biloxi in 1781, and Marie Anne married Jean Ryan at Mobile in 1786.
