Marvell Marie Harrell
Marvell Marie Harrell was born on 17 September 1925 at Carthage, the seat of Leake County, Mississippi. Her mother was Zelma Tinnie Harrell, then 27 and unmarried. Marvell had an older brother, Hayes W. Harrell, called Red, born in 1918. In April 1930 the census found the three of them in Beat 2 of Leake County, with Zelma, 32, heading the house. Marvell was four.
Her mother later married Jesse J. Jones, and four half brothers and sisters were born between 1933 and 1939: Della Jane, Jesse Thesel, Benjamin Wilson, who died as a baby in 1937, and Annie Lee.
On 14 January 1939 Marvell married John Wilson Cummings in Leake County. He was 25. She was thirteen, four months past her birthday. The clerk wrote her name as Maruelle Herrell and her age as sixteen. The record named her mother, Zelma Harrell, and her mother's husband by then, Jessie Jones, as the bride's family.
She and John had a daughter, Bettie Jo, born on 30 January 1944 in Richland Parish, Louisiana, when Marvell was eighteen. The family's home was Holly Ridge, a small community east of Rayville. A son, Jay W., followed. Another son, Bobby Joe, was born at Monroe in December 1951 and died there on Christmas Day, eight days old.
The Cummings marriage did not last. Marvell married L. H. Parker, a house painter born in 1919 at Diboll, Texas. They had about seven children, among them Roy, Freida Mae, Alice, Gladys, Theresa Ann, Tommy Roy and Cheryl. L. H. died at Baton Rouge in May 1983.
Marvell outlived him by almost thirty nine years. She buried her daughter Cheryl in 2003, and her daughter Bettie in 2011, when she was 85. She died at Houma, Louisiana, on 18 February 2022, aged 96.
