Zelma Tinnie Harrell
Zelma Tinnie Harrell was born on 12 February 1898 at Carthage, in Leake County, Mississippi. She was the first child of William Benjamin Harrell and Nancy Jane Horn, who had married about 1897. In June 1900 the census found the young family in Carthage town: William, 26, Nancy J., 20, and Zelma T., two. A baby brother born that year died in 1901. A sister, Opal, came much later, in 1915.
In 1920 Zelma, 22, was still at home in Carthage with her parents and Opal. She had two children of her own by then or soon after: Hayes W., called Red, born in December 1918, and Marvell Marie, born in September 1925. Her mother died in 1925, the year Marvell was born.
In 1930 the census found Zelma heading her own household in Beat 2 of Leake County, aged 32 and single, with Hays and Marvel. She later married Jesse J. Jones, two years younger, and had four more children: Della Jane in 1933, Jesse Thesel in 1935, Benjamin Wilson, who died as a baby in 1937, and Annie Lee in 1939. When Marvell married in January 1939, the county record named her mother Zelma Harrell and Jessie Jones as the bride's family.
Jesse died in 1969. Zelma died at Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on 25 January 1974, aged 75. She was buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Her stone gives her the name she was born with: "Zelma Harrell, Feb. 12, 1898, Jan. 25, 1974."
