Mary Adams
Mary Adams was born at Braintree, Massachusetts, on 25 February 1668. The town clerk wrote "Mary Adams Daughter of Joseph Addams & Abigail his wiffe borne 12th mo. 25th 1667". The year then began in March, so the twelfth month of 1667 was February of what is now counted as 1668. Her parents had given the name Mary to an earlier daughter, born on 8 November 1663, who evidently died young.
Her father, Joseph Adams, was a son of Henry Adams, the first of the Adams family at Braintree, according to the standard genealogies of the family. Her mother was Abigail, whom later genealogies call Abigail Baxter.
She became the second wife of Samuel Bass, a cooper of Braintree and a grandson of John Alden of the Mayflower. They were married by 18 July 1694, when her father's will, as a 1940 Bass genealogy cites it, already counted her as Samuel's wife. Her father died that December, aged about sixty-eight.
She had five children. Jonathan and Abigail were baptized together at the First Church of Braintree on 3 October 1697. Mary was baptized on 14 August 1698. Samuel was born on 26 July 1700 and Bethia on 2 February 1704.
The town clerk recorded her death: "Mary ye wife of Samuel Bass dyed ye 9th. March 1706." Her daughter Abigail was eight, and Bethia was about two. Her husband married Bethiah Nightingale at Boston that October.
