Mary Adelina Fleming
Mary Adelina Fleming, called Addie, was born on 25 January 1871 in West Union, Adams County, Ohio. Her parents were Levi Fleming and Mallissa Salisbury. Her death certificate names them both, as Levi Fleming and Melissa Salsbury. Her brother William Clay Henry Fleming was born in 1874. Her mother died in 1898, when Addie was twenty-seven.
She married George Coleman Bayless, who was twelve years older than she was. They had seven children: Della O'Marie (1890), William Lawrence (1893), Bethel Mae (1898), Elma Matilda (1901), Alma Ellanora (1901), Dewey G (1904) and Louella Edna (1908). Addie was widowed when George died in July 1944.
She died in West Union on 21 August 1950, aged 79. She is buried in Section 4 of West Union Cemetery beside George, under one granite stone that reads MARY A. 1871-1950.
For many years Addie kept an old woman in her home: Mrs. Tirzah Grooms, whom the West Union paper called her grandmother. Tirzah was very probably the mother of her father, Levi E. Fleming: Tresa Young, who had married again into the Grooms family. She died in the Bayless house in August 1918 at ninety-four. In March 1920 Addie bought 33 and three-quarter acres in Tiffin Township from William Bayless for $800, in her own name.
