Mary Ann Badgley
Mary Ann Badgley was born at Tyendinaga, the township east of Belleville on the Bay of Quinte, in Upper Canada. Her father was Thomas Badgley and her mother Sarah Grant, who came from Bath. Her birth year is given as 1835 in the census of 1901, with a birthday of 26 January, and as about 1831 by her age at death.
On 8 November 1853 she married Isaac Parfit in the Victoria District, the old judicial district around Belleville. Their children were born over the next fifteen years, among them Ira, born at Belleville in June 1860, Edith Alwilda about 1864 and Nathan about 1869. In 1861 the family was in Thurlow Township, the township that holds Belleville.
By 1881 they had moved north to Elzevir Township, in the Canadian Shield country of north Hastings. Mary, 46, kept house there for Isaac, 52, and seven children aged 12 to 26: Malicia, Cesesia, Emley, Ira, Bertha, Edith and Nathan. Ira went west to the United States within five years. Edith married James Downey at Bridgewater, Hastings County, on 21 December 1887, and Nathan married Evalene Storey at Napanee on 2 July 1895. Both marriage registers name their mother as Mary Ann, and Edith's gives her as Mary Ann Badgley.
In 1901 Mary A. Parfit, 66, Methodist, was living with Isaac in north Hastings. Isaac died in July 1904. Mary Ann returned to Thurlow and died there a widow on 12 August 1909, aged 78.
