Mary Ann Fain was born on 31 May 1853 in Tennessee, the daughter of Messer Fain and Mary Martin, both born in North Carolina. She married Richard Burton Golden in 1875 and bore at least eight children between 1877 and 1894.

Her husband died in 1910. She lived on at Blue Ridge as a widow for nineteen years and died on 10 January 1929, aged seventy five years, seven months and ten days, of heart failure with old age given as contributory. Her son signed the certificate. She is buried at Golden Cemetery.

Her maiden name exists in exactly one document. Two censuses record her only as Mary or Marry Ann Golden and both say she was born in Tennessee. Her death certificate says Fannin County, which was not created until 1854, the year after she was born, and it is the only paper in fifty years that names her father. The Tennessee answer was given twice by her own household while she was living.
