Joseph Lahua Golden, known as Hugh, was born on 4 November 1891 in Gilmer County, Georgia, the eighth of the nine children of Richard Burton Golden and Mary Ann Fain. The 1900 census has him at nine years old in the Boardtown and Cherrylog district, one of eight in the house.
He married Minnie Jane Tipton of the Sugar Creek district on 21 December 1919 in Fannin County. She was nineteen. The 1930 census finds them still at Sugar Creek with Irene eight, Ruth four and Opal two, and their son Gene was born at Blue Ridge that September.
Some time between 1933 and 1936 the family left the Georgia mountains for West Virginia. The two youngest children in the 1950 census are born there and the older ones in Georgia, which dates the move within three years.
By April 1950 the marriage had ended in everything but law. He is fifty eight, head of his own household in the Grant District of Wayne County, West Virginia, working as farm labour, and the enumerator has written separated against his name. Nine days earlier and one county away, his wife was recorded the same way.
He never went back to Georgia to live. He died on 8 December 1973 in Lawrence County, Ohio, aged eighty two, which is the Ironton country directly across the river from Huntington and about eight miles from where his wife was living. He was carried four hundred miles south to be buried at Golden Cemetery in Fannin County, in ground that carries the family's own surname. Minnie outlived him by twenty one years and is buried in West Virginia. Only his burial went home.
