Mary Ann Hale
Mary Ann Hale was the wife of John Hale of Kidwelly, Carmarthenshire. Her maiden name has not been found, and her parents are not known.
Her family tomb at Lewisham calls her a granddaughter of the Right Honourable Thomas Pitt, Earl of Londonderry. The Pitt family's own wills leave no room for her. The Earl's only grandchildren on record were the two children of his daughter Lady Lucy Pitt and her husband Pierce Meyrick. The son, Ridgeway Owen Meyrick, died at thirty-seven in 1773, and his only son died an infant. The daughter, Ann Elizabeth Meyrick, never married. Where the tomb's claim came from is not known.
By 1793 her husband kept a house at Phillimore Place in Kensington. On 4 June that year her son John Monckton Hale married Isabella Gale, daughter of John Gale of Cumberland, at Kensington. He became a London merchant. Her daughter Anna Maria married the mathematician Thomas Myers in 1807.
She was widowed in February 1799. She died on 1 February 1826, aged 71, and was buried at St Mary's, Lewisham, on 9 February. The burial register gives her home as Ferring, in Sussex. She is commemorated on the family tomb there, where her son-in-law was later buried with her. Her son was buried at Lewisham in May 1834, aged fifty-nine.
