Mary Ann McLean
Mary Ann McLean, called Mittie, was born in August 1829 in Alabama, in Wilcox County by family accounts. In 1880 she gave her father's birthplace as Scotland and her mother's as South Carolina. Family accounts name her parents as Jefferson Daniel McLean, born in Wilcox County about 1809, and Elizabeth Stenner, and trace the McLeans to a John McLean born on the Isle of Skye in 1749 who died in Robeson County, North Carolina, in 1815. Her own census answer puts a Scottish-born father one generation nearer.
On 15 February 1849, by family accounts, she married Philip Owens at Pine Apple. They had nine children, among them Elizabeth, called Betty, Asbery Brutus, Martha Frances, Wherry and Philip Marion, called Fee.
In June 1880 she was 49 and keeping house at Old Texas, Beat No. 11, Monroe County, for Philip and their sons Asbery, Wherry and Philip. Philip died in 1899. In June 1900 Mary, 70 and widowed, lived with her son Wherry and his family at Old Texas. The census taker recorded that she had borne nine children and that seven were living.
She died on 28 April 1907 in Monroe County, aged 77, and is buried in Jenkins Chapel Cemetery. Her son Wherry's death record, in 1927, gives her name as Mary Ann McLean.
