Wherry Owens
Wherry Owens was born on 20 August 1868 in Monroe County, Alabama, a son of Philip Owens and Mary Ann McLean. In June 1880, aged twelve, he was working on his father's farm at Old Texas, Beat No. 11, with his older brother Asbery and his younger brother Philip. His father's parents had both been born in South Carolina, and his mother's father in Scotland.
About 1888 he married Ida Pugh, who had grown up a few houses away at Old Texas. She was about sixteen. Their first child, Mary Elizabeth, called Lizzie, was born in March 1891, and Martha Corene, Nora, George Wherry, Phenie Marie, John David and Simon P. followed. One more child died young: in 1900 Ida had borne five and four were living.
On 4 June 1900 Wherry, 31, was farming his own land at Old Texas, free of mortgage. Ida was 27, and the children were Lizzie, 9, Marthey, 6, Nora, 5, and George, 2. His mother Mary, 70, a widow who had borne nine children, seven of them living, made her home with them.
His eldest daughter married John A. Godwin about 1908, and her first son was born at Old Texas in July 1909 and named Wherry, after him. In January 1920 Wherry and Ida were in the Simpkinsville precinct of Monroe County, with George, John, Simon and Martha still at home.
Wherry Owens died on 18 January 1927 near Pineapple, aged 58. His death record calls him a farmer and names his parents as Philip Owens and Mary Ann McLean. He is buried in Jenkins Chapel Cemetery in Monroe County under a tall marble stone that reads "He was a kind and affectionate husband, a fond father and a friend to all." Ida outlived him by twenty seven years and lies beside him.
