Mary Ann Roberts
Mary Ann Roberts was born on 22 June 1830 in Cambria County, Pennsylvania, at Cambria City beside Johnstown according to her memorial. In October 1850 she is Mary A., twenty, in the house of William Roberts, a farmer of forty-nine in Jackson Township, north of Johnstown. His wife then was Catherine, thirty-nine. The other children were Harriet, eighteen, Ester, fourteen, and Elizabeth and John, ten and nine, both at school. A labourer, John Moorland, lived with them. William owned land worth two thousand dollars.
Find a Grave links her to William Roberts and Ann Williams, who lie in the Beulah cemetery. Ann died in January 1837 at thirty-seven, when Mary Ann was six. William died at Johnstown in May 1855, aged fifty-four. The farmer of 1850 is very probably the same William, married again after Ann's death. Beulah was the Welsh settlement founded in Cambria County in the 1790s, and the names fit it. The census gives no relationships, so her parents are probable rather than proven. A second William Roberts, forty-eight, farmed in Conemaugh Township in 1850, and either man could be the one on the Beulah stone.
The Harriet of that household is very probably the Harriet Roberts who married William C. Smith. If so, the two girls were sisters. In 1879 Harriet's eldest son, William Roberts Smith, married Mary Ann's eldest daughter Alma, and the bride and groom were first cousins.
In April 1853 she married George Huntley, a young man from Vermont. Their first child, Alma, was born the next February. She bore eight children over nineteen years and buried three of them: Sarah Ann at eleven months in 1856, Charles at nine months in 1874, and George W. at twenty-four in 1888.
The family lived at Ebensburg, the county seat, where George kept the hardware store. Her two elder daughters were married from her house, Alma in October 1879 and Carrie in August 1881. Asked in 1880 where her mother was born, Alma said Pennsylvania.
She died on 14 July 1908, aged seventy-eight. Her headstone in the Huntley plot at Lloyd Cemetery reads MARY ANN WIFE OF GEO. HUNTLEY, with her dates. George outlived her by twelve years.
