Alma Huntley

b. 1854 · Aspinwall PA
Born 1854, Pennsylvania

Alma Huntley was born on 27 February 1854, the eldest daughter of George Huntley and Mary Ann Roberts. Her father was a Vermont man who kept the hardware store at Ebensburg, the county seat of Cambria County. The censuses of 1860 and 1870 find her in his house there at six and fifteen, so she was very likely born in Ebensburg. She was named for her father's sister Alma, who had died in Vermont on Christmas Day 1853, nine weeks before she was born.

On the evening of Thursday 2 October 1879 she married William Roberts Smith of Blairsville at her parents' house in the West ward of Ebensburg. It was his twenty-sixth birthday. The Presbyterian pastor, Rev. E. W. Brown, married them. The Cambria Freeman printed the notice a week later, and its writer clearly knew the family. He called the marriage "a union most fitting to be made" and spent the rest of his paragraph on a joke about how many Smiths there already were. The notice prints the groom as A. R. Smith, a misprint: the place, the date and every later record fit William.

The 1880 census caught the couple a year married, both twenty-six, boarding with a Margaret Scott at Blairsville in Indiana County. Asked where her parents were born, Alma answered Vermont for her father and Pennsylvania for her mother.

Four children followed. Charles Huntley Smith was born on 1 August 1880 and Bertro Harrington Smith on 22 June 1883. Willma came on 8 November 1884 and Ina Belle on 14 October 1888. The boy's middle name came from her father's side. George Huntley's youngest sister, Harriet, had married a Harrington, and the boy probably carried his great-aunt's married name.

By 1900 the family was at Aspinwall, a borough on the Allegheny River above Pittsburgh, and they stayed there through 1920. A family genealogy printed in 1914 gives their address as 103 Eastern Avenue. By then Charles had married Nell Priscilla Stewart and moved to Schuyler, Virginia. Bertro was in Brookline, Pittsburgh, with his wife Agnes Armstrong and a daughter. Willma was at Beaver with Alan Clyde McCowan and five children. Ina had married Harry Bramwell Conner of Aspinwall in 1910 and had a son.

The census of 1900 and her husband's death certificate both call her Alma H. Smith, and the H is probably Huntley. William retired and went south. He died at Lakeland, Florida, in January 1929, and his certificate names her as his wife. She was about seventy-four. That is the last record of her, and her own death has not been found, in Pennsylvania or in Florida.
