Mary Arnold
Mary Arnold was born in Bedfordshire about 1754. From childhood she lived in a small cottage at Melchbourne, a village north of Bedford, with three well-tilled acres around it. Her maiden name and her husband's name are not recorded. The Melchbourne registers show no Arnold baptism or marriage there before 1803, so she was probably born under another surname and married an Arnold elsewhere.
Her daughter Elizabeth married Samuel Hackett in 1811. About 1831 the Hacketts emigrated to America. They left their eldest daughter, Emily, with Mary as her companion. Emily grew up in the cottage, married Stephen Jacobs at Melchbourne in 1836, and brought her husband to live there.
In 1841 the census found Mary Arnold, aged between 85 and 89, in that household at Melchbourne, with Stephen and Emily Jacobs and their children Samuel and Jane. Emily and Stephen cared for her until she died. The date of her death has not been found.
