Elizabeth Arnold
Elizabeth Arnold married Samuel Hackett on 30 September 1811, in the neighboring Bedfordshire parishes of Upper Dean and Melchbourne. The children's grandmother, Mary Arnold, lived at Melchbourne in a cottage she had occupied since childhood. Elizabeth's own birth and baptism have not been found.
Her son-in-law never wrote down her first name. He called her Mother Hackett. She is identified as Elizabeth Arnold because her grandchildren's grandmother in England was "Grandmother Arnold" of Melchbourne, and because the only Samuel Hackett known to have married in those parishes in those years married an Elizabeth Arnold.
About 1831 she and her husband emigrated with two sons and three daughters. They left their eldest daughter, Emily, with her grandmother. The family lived at Homer and then at Auburn, New York. Her youngest child, Caroline Permelia, was born in New York on 4 April 1834. The children had been raised in the Church of England.
By the spring of 1838 she was gravely ill. Her daughter Mary Ann married William Breed Grow at Auburn on 22 May 1838. Because of her illness the wedding was held quietly, with only the family present. She died within the year, probably at Auburn. No grave has been found.
