Mary Browning
Mary was the wife of Thomas Browning of Salem and Topsfield in Massachusetts and the mother of his four daughters. Her maiden name is not known. Thomas was about fifty when their first daughter was baptised, so Mary was much younger than he was. They probably married just before he left England or soon after he reached Salem, where he was living by 1636. In the town grants of 1637 the household counted five persons.
Her daughters were all born at Salem. Mary was baptised on 7 January 1637/8 and married Edmund Towne. Elizabeth married James Symonds on 20 November 1661. Sarah married Joseph Williams the same day. Deborah was baptised on 31 January 1646/7. She married John Perkins in 1666, was widowed in 1668, and married Capt. Isaac Meacham.
Before 1657 the family moved to Topsfield, though they kept the Salem homestead. Thomas made his will on 16 February 1670/1 and named "my wife" his executrix. The Topsfield land was to go after her death to "my daughter towne her husband & my daughter Simons." He died early in 1671.
In 1675 the Salem property was divided between two of her sons-in-law, Joseph Williams and Isaac Meacham. The house "in the town" fell to Williams, and he agreed to pay Meacham twelve pounds on the death of Mary Browning, their mother-in-law. She was still living in that Salem house in 1682, when Joseph Williams died.
