Mary Browning
Mary Browning was baptized on 7 January 1638 and married Edmund Towne of Topsfield, ten years her senior and the son of the emigrant William. Ten children are recorded to them between 1655 and 1673, which if the baptism date is right means she began bearing at seventeen and finished at thirty five.
Edmund died before 3 May 1678, leaving her in her early forties with a house full of children, the youngest five years old. She lived on for close to another forty years.
What the record keeps of her, and it is more than it keeps of most wives in this generation, is a will. It was proved on 16 December 1717, and her sons Thomas and William were appointed administrators. She had property to dispose of and she made her own arrangements for it, decades after her husband's estate had been settled.
She was also in the town through 1692, when her husband's two sisters were hanged and a third was arrested. She was a Towne by marriage for some sixty years and she carried the name through the worst of it.
