Mary C. Sears, called Polly, was born in Hardy County, Virginia, on 25 August 1825. She married Benjamin Turner. Their children were William Charles (1849), Elizabeth E. (1850), Emily (1852), Mary Catherine (1855), Martin (1855) and Gabriel (1858).

She outlived three of her children. Martin died in 1881, and Emily and Mary Catherine both died in 1886. When her youngest son Gabriel married Annie Keplinger in December 1882, the Grant County register named his parents as Benjamin and Mary C. Turner. Fifty years after her death Gabriel's own death certificate gave his mother's maiden name as Polly Ann Sears.

She died in Grant County on 9 May 1894 and is buried at Mount Hebron Cemetery, Maysville. Her stone reads "Mary C., wife of Benj'n Turner". A memorial gives the cause as stomach trouble. Two different sets of parents are given for her in compiled sources: John T. Sears and Ruth Orahood, or Alexander Sears and Mary Howe.
