Mary Catherine Von Bokern was born at Osnabrück in Lower Saxony on 12 October 1871 and came to America in 1886, when she was fifteen. She married Albert Schierenbeck two years after she landed, at seventeen.
She bore five children and buried two of them. The 1900 census asks a married woman how many children she has had and how many are living, and her answer is five and three. The three are Gertrude, Mary Mabel and Harry. The other two can be named. Vine Street Hill, where her husband was buried three years later, took an Alfred Schierenbeck in August 1896 and a Clarence Schierenbeck in June 1898, into single graves rather than into the family lot the other Cincinnati Schierenbecks owned. Neither burial record gives an age or a parent, so this is elimination rather than proof, but there was no other Schierenbeck household in the city losing children in those years.
Albert died in October 1901. She was thirty. She married Joseph Huser, another German, and the 1910 census finds the whole reassembled household in Cincinnati Ward 16: Huser at the head, Mary his wife, her two Schierenbeck children still under their own surname, and her father in the house at sixty five.
She died on Christmas Day 1929 at 1131 Selon Street, a widow for the second time, and was buried three days later at Saint Mary Cemetery in Saint Bernard. Her granddaughter Lorene was buried in the same ground fifty one years later.
Her stone is a year out. It gives 1928. The death certificate and the Ohio death index both say 25 December 1929, and the certificate states her age as fifty eight years, two months and thirteen days, which counts back to 12 October 1871 and forward to Christmas Day 1929 exactly. The paper wins.
