Gerhard Friedrich Von Bokern
Gerhard Friedrich Von Bokern was born on 17 October 1844 at Ankum, a Catholic village in the Landkreis Osnabrück in Lower Saxony, and baptised there two days later in the church of Sankt Nikolaus. His father was Ferdinand von Bokern, a joiner, and his mother Maria Elisabeth Dillhoff. A Friedrich von Bokern, very probably his father's elder brother, stood as his godfather, and Friedrich became his name. In America he was Frank, and sometimes Fred.
His father died of consumption at Tütingen, in the same parish, when Gerhard Friedrich was thirteen. His grandfather Adam and his great grandfather Johann Friedrich had both been master joiners at Ankum.
He was a farmer. His daughter Maria Elizabeth was born on 17 October 1869, his own birthday, and his daughter Mary Catherine at Osnabrueck in 1871, so the crossing came after that.
By 1910 he was a widower of sixty five living in Mary's household in Cincinnati Ward 16, in the same rooms as his grandson Harry, and the census taker wrote him down as Fred Van Bogan, which is what an American ear does to Von Bokern. He died on 4 May 1915 and was buried at Saint Joseph Cemetery on West Eighth Street, Section 25, Grave 734.
