Mary Dugan
Mary Dugan was born in Kentucky about 1837. In the spring of 1853, aged about sixteen, she married Alfred Carlisle in Hardin County: the license was taken 27 April and the marriage performed 3 May, and the county's index preserves the event twice, once calling the bride Mary Dugan and once Mary Padgett. The state's birth register decides between them. When her daughters Sarah F. and Elizabeth D. were registered in the 1850s, the mother's name was written Mary Dugan both times.
She kept Alfred's household at Colesburg through at least seventeen years and nine children: Sarah Frances, Elizabeth, called Drusilla, James William, Henry, John Morgan, Nancy Ann, Hillery, Lou Ellen and Joseph. The 1860 census shows her at twenty three as Mary E.; the 1870 census, with the family's name mangled to Carliele, shows her at the middle of a houseful that included five year old Nancy.
She died between 1870 and 1880, in 1876 by the account compiled at her husband's grave, and Alfred remarried a much younger woman. No death record or grave is known for her. Her daughter Nancy, who was about eleven when she died, could not pass the name on: when Nancy died in Missouri in 1939, her own son answered Unknown for his grandmother.
