Mary E. Quirk was born in Ireland about 1842. Family memory places her birth in County Galway; no document names the county. She married Edward Varley, another Irish immigrant, and by 1855 they were at Milford, New Hampshire, where her children were born: John in 1855, Julia about 1859, Patrick about 1861 and Mary J. about 1865.

By 1870 she was on her own. The census of Wilton that year has Mary E. Varley, 27, born in Ireland, head of the household, with Julia, 11, Patrick, 10, and Mary J., 5. Ten years later she was at Greenville, the mill village south of Wilton, aged 39, with Julia, 21, Patrick, 19, who worked in the cotton mill, and Mary J., 15. Her sons John and Patrick both became hairdressers, and by the early 1880s both were working at Waltham, Massachusetts. Mary followed them. By 1886 she was living as a widow at Taylor Street, corner of Hall, and from 1888 at 44 Taylor Street, where Patrick, then a barber on Main Street, lived with her.

She died at that house on the evening of Friday, 3 October 1890. The Waltham Daily Tribune printed the notice the next day: "The death of Mrs. Mary Varley of 44 Taylor street, occurred last evening suddenly, at her residence at 10:45 o'clock. Her age was forty-eight and three months. Funeral from residence tomorrow, Sunday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock, relatives and friends invited without further notice." She was 48, the wife of Edward Varley. She was buried in Calvary Cemetery, Waltham, in Section 6, Lot 726, the lot that later took her son Patrick, his wife, and three more of her children and grandchildren. Three years later the Waltham directory still printed her name, with the note "died Oct. 3, 1890."
