Mary Eleanor Caplinger
Mary Eleanor Caplinger was born in Virginia about 1803. The census of 1860 gave her age as 60 and the census of 1870 as 67, and her gravestone reads 1803. Her marriage record names her father as George Caplinger. He was almost certainly George C. Caplinger, born in Pendleton County in 1784, who had crossed the mountains to Randolph County about 1800 and founded the Caplinger settlement a few miles north of Beverly. In 1822 he was the only grown man of that name in the county.
Her mother is not known. George Caplinger married Sarah Collett on 14 May 1804, after Mary was born, and the two county histories that list his children do not name Mary among them.
On 3 December 1822, in Randolph County, Mary married Robert Little. She was about nineteen and he was thirty two. Their children were Sarah, born in April 1824; George Caplinger, born in September 1825 and named for her father; and Jane Elizabeth, born in March 1829. Sarah married Elijah M. Hart in July 1840.
Robert died on 2 March 1846. Nine months later Jane married Hoy McLane, and Mary spent the rest of her life close to them. In 1860 she was living in the McLane household in Randolph County, aged 60, with her daughter Elizabeth, Hoy, and the grandchildren Minerva, Mary M. and Ann. In 1870 she was still with them at Beverly, aged 67, and the census clerk wrote her name as Mary E. Little.
She died in 1872 and was buried in Beverly Cemetery. Her father had been buried there in December 1870. Her stone gives her whole name, with the spelling her children used: Mary Eleanor Caplinger Lytle.
