Sarah C. Little
Sarah C. Little was born in Randolph County, in the mountains of western Virginia. Her burial record at Gnatty Creek Cemetery gives the day as 25 April 1824, and the census takers of 1850 and 1860 found her aged 25 and 36. Her parents were Robert Little and Mary Eleanor Caplinger, who had married in Randolph County on 3 December 1822. Her mother's father, George Caplinger, had founded the Caplinger settlement on the river a few miles north of Beverly, the county seat. The county clerks wrote the family name Little. Her brother and sister later wrote it Lytle.
She had a brother, George Caplinger Lytle, born in September 1825, and a sister, Jane Elizabeth, born in March 1829.
On 22 July 1840, in Randolph County, Sarah married Elijah M. Hart. She was sixteen and he was twenty one. The marriage record names her father, Robert Little. Her father died in March 1846. Her mother lived until 1872, the last years in the household of Jane and her husband Hoy McLane at Beverly.
The Harts lived near Beverly for close to thirty years. In 1844 Elijah was one of the captains of the county militia. In 1850 the census found the household in Randolph County: Elijah, 31; Sarah C., 25; Creed, 9; Theodore, 6; Mary E., 3; and Lee A., a baby. A young man of 21, David Nutter, lived with them. In 1860 Sarah was 36, with seven children at home: Creed W., 19; Theodore, 16; Mary E., 13; Leann, 9; Vernon D., 7; Eveline, 4; and Edgar, 1. All seven were born at or near Beverly.
After the Civil War the family moved west. Elijah sat on the county Board of Supervisors in 1866. By 1870 Sarah, 46, was living at Buckhannon in Upshur County. Two daughters married there: Lee Ann married James H. Pinnell in December 1869, and Mary Elizabeth married William H. Hilleary in May 1873. By 1880 Sarah and Elijah were in Elk district, Harrison County, with Eva and Vernon still at home.
Sarah died at Romines Mills, Harrison County, on 12 March 1885, aged sixty. She was buried at Gnatty Creek Cemetery. Her daughter Lee Ann was buried there three years later, and Elijah in 1908. When her son Vernon died at Clarksburg in 1923, his death record named his mother as Sarah C. Litle.
