Mary Elizabeth Brown
Mary Elizabeth Brown was born on 25 October 1824. Her family lived at Commack, in the town of Smithtown on Long Island. Her parents were probably Stephen Brown, a Smithtown man born in 1797, and Jemima Blatchley of Dix Hills, who married about 1821 and raised seven children at Commack. Mary Elizabeth would have been the second, after a Sarah Jemima who died in 1840.
She married Whitman P. Conklin. Their children included George, Albert, Warren William, Martha and Charles. Warren was born at Commack in June 1852. In 1860 Mary, 35, was keeping house in the town of Smithtown for Whitman and four children. She was there again in the censuses of 1865 and 1870.
Stephen Brown died at Commack in February 1860 of apoplexy, the old word for a stroke, and Jemima lived until 1888. Mary was widowed in February 1901. She died on 9 September 1912, aged 87, and was buried in Landing Cemetery at Smithtown beside her husband. Their shared stone reads MARY E. BROWN, HIS WIFE, 1824 - 1912.
