Mary Elizabeth Dooley
Mary Elizabeth Dooley was born on 10 July 1852. Her family called her Mollie. On 23 December 1869, at 17, she married Jewett Henry Grady in Botetourt County. He was about 40, a Confederate veteran and a widower with three young daughters.
She bore ten children over the next 23 years: Lula, Bertie Lee, Sarah Melissa, Willie, Jeanettea Pearl, Rosa, Sallie, Nora Edith, Pernie Mae and James Ambrose. Rosa died in 1882 at two. Jewett died in April 1893, the year James Ambrose was born, and left Mollie a widow at 40 with small children still at home.
In March 1901 her daughter Willie was married at "Mrs. Grady's" in Botetourt County by Jonas Graybill, a minister of the German Baptist, or Dunkard, Church. Mollie was a member of the Dunkard Church at Troutville and well known throughout Botetourt County. A studio photograph shows her standing beside a carved pedestal with a potted plant, in a high-collared dark dress, her hair parted in the middle and drawn back. Her daughter Jeanettea Pearl died in 1907, at 27.
Mary Grady died at 6:30 in the evening of 22 December 1922 at the Roanoke home of her daughter, Mrs. T. M. Boggess, at 711 Elm Avenue S.E. She was 70. The paper put her age at 72. She was buried beside Jewett in the Brick Union Cemetery after a funeral at the Dunkard Church at Troutville. Mourners in Roanoke could take train No. 14 at 12:40 and come home on No. 13 from Troutville at 3:51.
