Mary Ellen Stubbs
Mary Ellen Stubbs was born about 1896 in Missouri. She married James Mayhan and lived with him at Marble City, in Sequoyah County, Oklahoma, where she was known as Ellen. In January 1920 she was 24, with four children under seven: Dessie, Frankie, Cleadus and Clarence, who had been born on 1 November 1918. By 1930 there were eight at home. Her daughter Martha was born at Marble City on 1 November 1928, and when Martha applied for a Social Security number in 1944 she named her mother as Mary E. Stubbs. Two more daughters, Coralee and Alice, followed.
In the early 1930s the Mayhans often drove down to Evening Shade, south of Marble City, where the Stubbs family lived. By 1941 most of the family had gone west to Farmersville, in the San Joaquin Valley of California. There, on 14 June 1941, Ellen's son Kenneth, 20, was killed when a Southern Pacific train struck the car he was riding in with his father and his brother Cletis.
Her son Clarence's obituary of 1992 names her as his mother, Mary Ellen Stubbs Mayhan.
