William Clarence Mayhan
William Clarence Mayhan was born on 1 November 1918 at Marble City, in Sequoyah County, Oklahoma. His parents were James Mayhan and Mary Ellen Stubbs. He went by Clarence.
On 16 July 1938, at nineteen, Clarence married Jocie Cleo Dobbs at Sallisaw, the county seat. Their first daughter, Mary Lee, was born at Sallisaw on 18 March 1939. In April 1940 the census found the three of them in Marble Township, just outside Marble City and near the Dwight Indian Training School, a mission boarding school. Clarence and Cleo were both 21, and they had lived in the same place since 1935.
On 16 October 1940, the first day of the peacetime draft, Clarence registered at Marble City, giving his birth as 1 November 1918 in Sequoyah County.
A second daughter, Betty Lou, was born later. Clarence made his living as a plumber and spent years in California. He retired from Plumbers Union Local 159 in Oroville, in the Sacramento Valley. He was a Baptist.
He came back to northeastern Oklahoma and lived at Bluejacket, in Craig County. He died at Vinita on Saturday, 20 June 1992, aged 73. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. the next Wednesday at Agent Chapel in Sallisaw, with Rev. Billy Ray Jackson officiating. He was buried in Maple Cemetery northeast of Sallisaw, under a double granite stone headed "MAYHAN" that he shares with Cleo.
His obituary named his survivors: his wife Jocie of the home; two daughters, "Betty Lou Humphries of Anderson, Calif., and Mary Thomas of Big Cabin"; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Lillian Spangler of Wilton, Marsha Foster of Valley Springs and Alice Fink of Morgan Hill, all in California; and a brother, Stephen Mayhan of Red Bluff, California. His grandson Jerold Risley was one of the six pallbearers.
