Mary Ethel Parfitt
Mary Ethel Parfit was born in 1899 in Stutsman County, North Dakota, the daughter of Ira Allen Parfit, an Ontario-born farmer who had come to the Dakotas by way of Montana, and his wife Ethel M. In June 1900 she was one year old in her father's house in Montpelier Township, south of Jamestown, with her mother, 35, and a six-year-old half-sister, Thedth, her mother's daughter by an earlier marriage. Her surname was written Parfit and Parfitt in different records.
On 10 August 1916 she married Gustavus O. Bolkan of Griggs County, a farmer's son of Norwegian stock nine years older than herself. Between 1919 and 1935 she bore nine children in Griggs County: Mildred Zylpha, Eunice, Selmar Allen, Floyd Elton, Lois, Vern Gus, Iola, Beulah and Robert Owen, and a tenth, Lynn D., after the move to Oregon. In 1930 she was Ethel, 30, at Sverdrup Township with six children under twelve.
The family left North Dakota after 1935 and was farming in the Needy precinct of Clackamas County, Oregon, by 1940, with nine children at home. They settled at Redland, east of Oregon City. Her daughter Eunice died in 1954 at 33. Mary Ethel died on 18 August 1956 in Clackamas County and was buried at Redland Pioneer Cemetery. Gustavus was laid beside her in 1963, and their stone carries their wedding date between their names.
