Mary French
Mary French was a daughter of Ensign Thomas French of Ipswich in Massachusetts and his wife Mary. She married Robert Smith before March 1656/7, when the two of them testified in a lawsuit brought by Henry Kemball against Thomas Smith and others. Their son Thomas was born about 1656 and their daughter Mary at Ipswich on 28 October 1658.
Within a few years they moved to Rowley Village, the settlement that later became the town of Boxford and was then closely tied to Topsfield. Phebe was born on 26 August 1661 and Amy on 16 August 1668. There were also Samuel, Ephraim, Jacob, Nathaniel and a daughter "Meriah." When Mr. Capen became minister of the Topsfield church in 1684, Robert Smith's wife was one of the members in full communion.
Her father died in August 1680 and left "to my daughter Mary Smith, one Cow." Her husband made his will on 7 August 1693 and left his property to her, his wife Mary, and to their children. Her son Thomas, the eldest, received no legacy; he lived with "his grandfather ffrainch." Her son Nathaniel, an invalid, was left in the care of his brother Samuel. Her brother John French stood surety for the estate and helped appraise it in 1698.
Mary survived her husband twenty six years and died about 1719. In 1731 her sons Ephraim, Jacob and Samuel made a final division of the estate, having bought out their brothers and sisters.
