Amy Smith
Amy Smith was born on 16 August 1668 and married Joseph Towne on 13 March 1687, at eighteen. Her elder sister Phebe had married Joseph's first cousin Jacob four years before, so the two Smith daughters went into two branches of the same Topsfield family inside a decade.
She bore eight children over eighteen years, from Benjamin in 1691 to Amos in 1709, and gave her own name to the daughter born in 1704. Nathaniel was born on 1 June 1700, and the Topsfield town clerk entered that birth as the son of Joseph and Amie, which is the only place in the public record where her given name is written down in her lifetime.
Joseph died in 1717, when the youngest was eight. She did not remarry, and she lived on at Topsfield for another thirty nine years, dying on 22 February 1756 at eighty seven. She had outlived her husband by more than half her life, and she saw her grandchildren's generation reach adulthood: her grandson Nathaniel, born 1725, was dead at Cape Breton in 1745, eleven years before her.
