Mary Bell was a daughter of Francis Bell, one of the first settlers of Stamford, Connecticut, and his wife Rebecca. Her brother Jonathan, born in 1641, was the first child born in the town. She married Joshua Hoyt, son of Simon Hoyt, and they made their home in Stamford. Joshua was the town drummer, the man who beat the drum to call people to meeting and to muster, and he later represented Stamford in the colony's General Court.

The Stamford town register lists their children: Mary, born 22 December 1664; Rebecca, 21 September 1667; Joshua, 4 October 1670; Sarah, 17 of an unrecorded month in 1674; Samuel, 3 July 1678; Hannah, 1 September 1681; Moses, 7 October 1683; and Abigail, 20 August 1685. A daughter Mercy died on 24 July 1731.

Her mother died in 1684. By her father's order, her mother's clothes were divided equally between Mary and her sister Rebecca Tuttle. Her father died in January 1690 and left a bequest to "Mary Hoyt" in his will. Joshua died the same year, and Mary survived him. Her son Samuel became the Stamford blacksmith.
