Rebecca Bell
Rebecca was the wife of Francis Bell, one of the first settlers of Stamford, Connecticut. Her maiden name is not known. Their son Jonathan, born in September 1640 by the family Bible, was the first child born in the town. A daughter Rebecca followed in August 1643 and a daughter Mary at the end of May 1646.
Her husband was the town's lieutenant, a deputy to the New Haven General Court and a magistrate. In December 1657 a Greenwich woman told him to his face that his posterity would suffer for his sins. Her daughter Rebecca married Jonathan Tuttle and died at New Haven on 2 May 1676, leaving four sons. Her daughter Mary married Joshua Hoyt, the Stamford town drummer. Her son Jonathan married Mercy Crane in 1662 and later Susanna Pierson, and became a captain, a justice and a deputy to the Connecticut legislature.
Rebecca Bell died at Stamford on 17 May 1684. An inventory of her clothes was entered in the first book of town records, and by her husband's order they were divided equally between her two daughters, Rebecca Tuttle and Mary Hoyt. Rebecca Tuttle had died eight years before. Francis survived his wife by six years and died in January 1690.
