Mary Jane Davis
Mary Jane Davis was born on 26 August 1877 in Reynolds County, Missouri. Her death certificate names her father as James Davis and gives her mother's maiden name as Johnson. Her mother, Ellen, outlived her and was Mrs. Ellen Dathero of Bunker, Missouri, in 1937. Her brother Will Davis lived at Pocahontas, Arkansas.
On 9 July 1896, when she was eighteen, she married Darius Jackson, an Illinois-born tie maker. They lived near Van Buren in Carter County. In 1910 the family was on the Ellington Road in Carter Township. Mary had borne four children by then and all were living: Stella, Alpha, Seva and Andrew. Floyd was born about 1911.
Darius died on Christmas Eve 1912, after a few days' illness. The paper said she was left with young children "in very straitened circumstances and almost wholly without means of support," and his employer raised a subscription for her. She later married Thomas Hill and had one more son, Spencer Marion Hill, born in 1919. That marriage ended in divorce.
Mary Hill died at Farmington, St. Francois County, at three in the morning on 5 October 1937, of a massive cerebral hemorrhage. She was 60. Her body was brought home to Van Buren and buried on 7 October by Crow Funeral Service. Her obituary names her five Jackson children: Mrs. Luke Moore of Van Buren, Mrs. William Crouch of La Junta, Colorado, Andrew Jackson and Floyd Jackson of Van Buren, and Mrs. Seba Strafuss of La Junta. It adds that all of her family attended the funeral "except her mother and two grandchildren."
