Stella Marie Jackson
Stella Marie Jackson was born at Van Buren, Carter County, Missouri. Her obituary gives the date as 22 July 1900. The 1910 census makes her 13 that April, and her memorial gives 22 July 1897. Her father, Darius Andrew Jackson, was an Illinois-born tie maker, and her mother was Mary Jane Davis of Reynolds County. They had married in July 1896.
In 1910 Stella was the eldest child at home on the Ellington Road in Carter Township, with her sisters Alpha and Seva and her brother Andrew. Her brother Floyd was born about 1911. On Christmas Eve 1912 her father died after a few days' illness, and the family was left nearly without means. Her mother later married Thomas Hill, and a half-brother, Spencer Hill, was born in 1919.
About 1915 or 1916 she married Luke Allen Moore at Van Buren. He was a Carter County man born in 1874, more than twenty years older than she was. He served as a deputy sheriff and as a state conservation agent, enforcing the game and fish laws. They raised a large family: daughters Hazel, Mabel, Ann, Dorma Lee and Rosemary, and sons Allen Jackson, Dale and David Michael. Allen, born in 1925, carried her maiden name as his middle name. Luke was a Catholic, a member of St. George's at Van Buren. Stella belonged to the South Van Buren General Baptist Church.
Luke died in November 1962 at a rest home in Lutesville, and Stella gave the facts for his death certificate. She lived the rest of her life at Van Buren. She died on Saturday, 30 November 1974, at Doctors Hospital in Blytheville, Arkansas, where her daughter Hazel lived. She was 74 by her obituary. Her funeral was held at her own church with the Rev. Bob Bradford officiating, and she was buried in the Van Buren cemetery. Five daughters, three sons, her brothers Andrew Jackson, Floyd Jackson and Spencer Hill, her sisters Alpha Crouch and Seba Straffus, 21 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren survived her.
