Mary Louise Johnson was born in Illinois, the daughter of Albert and Matilda Jane Johnson. Her gravestone gives her birth as 30 November 1863. Her obituary gives the same day in 1864.

In early childhood she moved with her family to Kansas, where she grew up. In December 1879 she married Eli E. Hinkle, who had come to Kansas from Iowa as a boy. She was sixteen. Her obituary places the wedding at Independence, Kansas; his says Metz. They had eleven children, and three died as babies.

The family lived in Chautauqua County and later in Coffey County. In 1916 they moved to Silver Creek, Nebraska, and made it their home.

She joined the Methodist church about 1916. Her obituary says that "in spite of the handicap of being practically bedfast and nearly blind for the past several years she has remained cheerful and always welcomed a visit from her friends and neighbors."

She died at her home in Silver Creek at eight o'clock on Monday morning, 6 August 1934. Eight children survived her: Mrs. Cora Knoble of Columbus, Mrs. Rena King of Wichita, George Hinkle of Aliceville, Kansas, Ira Hinkle of Clarks, and Mrs. Ruth Metzer, Laun, Albert and William Andrew Hinkle, all of Silver Creek. So did twelve grandchildren, two great grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Lydia Hinkle of Neodesha, Kansas, and Mrs. Ella Schultz of Columbus, Kansas. Rev. Taylor held the funeral at the Methodist church in Silver Creek. She is buried in Silver Creek Cemetery under a stone marked "Mother".
