Laun E. Hinkle
Laun E. Hinkle was born on 11 February 1903 in Kansas, the youngest of the eleven children of Elen Eli Hinkle and Mary Louise Johnson. Three of those children died as babies. The Kansas state census of 1905 found him, aged two, with his family in Coffey County. In 1915 they were still there, in Avon Township near the village of Aliceville.
In November 1910 his parents and three of their children joined the Methodist church at Aliceville. In 1916 or 1917, when Laun was about fourteen, the family moved north to Silver Creek, a village on the Platte River in Merrick County, Nebraska. He lived there for the rest of his life.
In 1930 he was still in his father's household at Silver Creek. On 4 October 1930, at Columbus, he married Helen Eva Staniec. She was twenty one, a daughter of the Polish farmer Bartley Staniec of the Nance County colony around Krakow and Genoa. The marriage record names his parents as Eli Hinkle and Mary Johnson.
His mother had died in 1934, an invalid for years. In 1940 the census found Laun, 37, as head of a household in Silver Creek village, with Helen, 31, their son Laun, 4, and his father Eli, 84, who lived with them until his death in September 1941. They had lived in the same house in 1935. In 1950 the family was in Silver Creek Township.
Laun died at Silver Creek on 14 November 1985, aged eighty two. He is buried in Silver Creek Cemetery under a shared red granite stone with Helen, who outlived him by twenty two years. Their son Laun Jr. died in August 2007, four months before her.
