Mary Donahoe was born in Ireland about August 1848, the daughter of John Donahue and Margaret Cusick. On 17 May 1868, aged 19, she married Thomas Mitchell, an Irish-born laborer, at Waltham, Massachusetts. Her first child, Mary Elizabeth, was born there on 7 August 1869, and at least nine more followed over the next twenty years: Margaret, Winifred, Edward Martin, Ellen, Katherine, Annie, John Francis, Isabella and Alice Madeline. The family lived on John Street in Waltham.
Her daughter Mary Elizabeth married Patrick Edward Varley in 1892. In 1910 Mary and Thomas were still keeping house in Ward 6 of Waltham with five grown children. Her daughter Annie died in 1908.
Mary died at Waltham on 8 March 1914. Her death record names her parents, John Donahue and Margaret Cusick. She is buried at Calvary Cemetery, Waltham, under the Mitchell family stone: "1849 MARY MITCHELL 1914". Her surname is spelled Donahoe, Donohoe, Donohue and Donahue in different documents.
