Mary Elizabeth Varley
Mary Elizabeth Mitchell was born at Waltham, Massachusetts, on 7 August 1869, the first child of Thomas Mitchell, an Irish-born laborer, and Mary Donahoe, who had married at Waltham the year before. She grew up on John Street with a houseful of younger brothers and sisters: Winifred, Margaret, Edward, Ellen, John, Isabella, Alice and Margaret Loretta.
On 28 June 1892, aged 22, she married Patrick Edward Varley, a barber eight years older with a shop on Main Street. Their children were Edwin Clement, born 1893, Arthur Paul, 1896, Chester Joseph, 1898, Warren Francis, 1901, Mary Patricia, 1905, and Eugene. The family lived on Taylor Street and then at 156 Myrtle Street, while Patrick's shop moved up Moody Street. Her son Arthur died in 1928, aged 31.
Mary died in 1939, aged about 70. She is buried in Calvary Cemetery, Waltham, in Section 6, Lot 726, under the granite monument lettered VARLEY. Patrick followed her there in 1955; his death notice called him "husband of the late Mary (Mitchell) Varley."
