Mary Patterson
Mary Patterson married Smiley Harbaugh on 14 March 1839 in Warwick Township, Tuscarawas County, Ohio, and was alive at Coshocton in 1850, aged thirty three and born in Pennsylvania.
Two other Pattersons were in that house with her: Ellen, eighteen, and Olivia, twelve. Nobody says who they were, and the 1850 census does not ask, but two young women of a bride's surname living in her husband's house are most likely her sisters.
The household came apart within two years. Her daughter Janietta died on 17 March 1851, aged five, and her son Denis on 9 July 1851. Their stones in Oak Ridge Cemetery at Coshocton call them a daughter and a son "of S. & M. Harbaugh." Mary herself was dead by March 1852, when Smiley married again. Her eldest, Lucian, was about eleven, and a family history says he was raised from that age by a John Dayton.
Her name survives on her own marriage record, on her children's stones as M., and in the mouth of her son, who gave it as Mary Patterson on one licence and as Ellen Patterson on the next one thirteen months later. He was seventy six by then. A Harbaugh family history of 1947 joined the two and called her Mary Ellen Patterson, 1817 to 1850. That may be right, or it may be the history combining his two answers.
