Lucien Harbaugh was born in Tuscarawas County, Ohio, on 4 May 1839, and was eleven years old in his father's house at Coshocton in 1850. He served in the Civil War, drew a pension on it from 1890 in Indiana and from 1907 in Ohio, and was still drawing it on a payment card when he died. In 1871 he married Eliza Lowe across the state line in Ohio County, Indiana, and by 1880 he was a tinner at Manchester in Dearborn County, with Eliza and their eight year old daughter Mary L. in the house. He was still at Manchester with her thirty years later.

Eliza died between 1910 and 1914. He married twice more in the fourteen months after that, at seventy five and again at seventy six, and it is the second and third weddings that name his parents, because a marriage licence asks an old man questions a death certificate never gets the chance to.

He died on 9 August 1933 and was buried at Dayton, where the national soldiers' home was, on a headstone the government paid for.
