Mary Schmidt
Mary Schmidt was born in Missouri about 1857, by the age the 1880 census taker wrote beside her name. Who her parents were is unknown. Schmidt was among the commonest names of Ste. Genevieve County's German settlement, and no record connects her to any one family of it.
In the fall of 1875 she married Henry Stackle of Zell. The certificate, filed with the county recorder in October 1875, joins the single Henry Stokle and the single Mary Schmidt, and is signed by Jos. Theod. Stein, the priest at New Offenburg, who had married Henry's brother Joseph there three years before. In 1880 the census found her at twenty-three keeping house on the Union Township farm with the first four of her children. In August 1883 she and Henry acknowledged a deed alongside his brother and sister and their spouses; the clerk wrote Henry Steckle and Mary his wife, and she signed by mark, her name written out as Mary Stockely. It is the only document that bears her own mark.
Nine children are known, born between 1876 and 1893: Joseph, Helen, Henry John, Mary Lee, Andrew, Sophia, Edward, Leo and August. She was dead by the first of June 1900, when the census enumerated her husband as a widower; her death fell between August's birth in 1893 and that day, in the years before Missouri kept death certificates.
Her name survives in her children's paperwork. Four of their death certificates, filed across the middle of the next century, call her Mary Schmidt, Mary A. Schmidt, and twice Mary Smith, the same name in English dress. And when her daughter Helen married Andrew J. Operle at the Church of Ste. Genevieve in April 1898, the parish register wrote the bride's parents in one line: Henry Stackle, Mary Schmidt.
