Andrew Joseph Stackle
Andrew Joseph Stackle was born October 23, 1883 in Ste. Genevieve County, Missouri; his death certificate names the hamlet, Weingarten, one of the county's German Catholic settlements. He was the fifth of the eight known children of Henry Stackle, a laborer of Zell, and Mary Schmidt. His mother died while he was a boy, and the 1900 census shows him at sixteen in his widowed father's crowded household.
About 1908 he married Mary Helen Burgert, a Ste. Genevieve girl of another German family, and the 1910 census finds them in the town with their first son, Edgar, a year old. Three more children followed: Harry in 1912, Andrew Charles in 1917, Leola in 1925. He registered for the draft in the First World War, and in the late 1920s moved the family up to St. Louis. By 1940 they lived on Murdock Avenue in Shrewsbury, and his 1942 registration, the so-called old man's draft, has him working for the Wermann Construction Company. His trade across the record is iron worker.
On June 1, 1947 the automobile he was driving struck a pole on the Murdock Cut-Off in Shrewsbury. His wife Mary Helen, riding with him, died of her injuries two days later; the certificate he signed as informant calls it an unavoidable accident. He never remarried. From about 1953 he lived at St. Joseph's Hill Infirmary above the Meramec in Jefferson County, and he died there April 13, 1962, a retired iron worker of seventy-nine. He is buried at Resurrection Cemetery in St. Louis County, where Mary Helen had been buried fifteen years before.
