Mary Scofield
Mary Scofield was born at Stamford, Connecticut, about 1678. A compiled history of the Scofield family makes her a daughter of Daniel Scofield and Abigail Merwin. Her grandfather Daniel Scofield was one of the first settlers of Stamford.
By 1695 she had married Jonas Weed, very probably the Stamford shoemaker of that name, as his second wife. The compiled history gives Mary and Jonas five children: Abigail, born 5 April 1695; John, 19 November 1698; Miles, 24 February 1700/1; Sarah, 10 March 1702/3; and Nathan, 20 May 1705. Miles was a family name: her mother's father was Miles Merwin. The town register lists those five after three older Weed children, Jonas, Benjamin and Jonathan, born between 1678 and 1684. Jonas Weed the shoemaker died at Stamford "at eavening" on 18 November 1706.
On 31 December 1707, thirteen months later, she married Samuel Hoyt, the Stamford blacksmith, whose first wife had died in March 1707. She raised his four young children with her own. The Stamford register lists the children of Samuel and Mary: Mary, born 23 September 1708; Samuel, 28 January 1709/10; Israel, who died on 25 September of a year left blank; Samuel again, 7 March 1712/13; Rachel, 31 January 1714/15; Jonathan, 14 January 1716/17; Nehemiah, 13 April 1718; Martha, 3 October 1719; and Deborah, 3 July 1721.
When Samuel died in August 1738 she and her stepson Josiah were appointed to administer his estate. It was divided in 1741 among the widow and nine children. She was still living in March 1748, when she deeded land to her son Jonathan.
