Mary Smith
Born about March 1814 in Ireland, by the age to the month on her Oakwood stone. She bore at least nine children, all of them in Ohio, and was widowed on 12 September 1861 when George died seven days after making his will.
He left her the Tallmadge farm for life and named her one of his two executors. When the will was finally proved in March 1864 she accepted the trust, gave a bond of twenty five hundred dollars with a John Patterson as her surety, and took out letters testamentary. Within a month she had sold the thirty acres to Dudley H. Beaman and taken back a purchase money mortgage, six notes of a hundred dollars each payable to her over the following six years. Three of her children were still minors, so she and her son William gave a further bond of two thousand dollars undertaking to obtain their quit claim when they came of age.
The census of 1870 finds her keeping house as head of her own household with three hundred and fifty dollars of real estate and a hundred in personal property, her son James and her daughter Maggie both working in a bagging and twine factory. She lived thirteen years a widow and died in 1874.
