George M. Patterson was born in Ohio in October 1845 to Irish immigrant parents. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in September 1861, four days after his father died, and spent the whole war at sea: USS Brooklyn from 1861 to 1863, then USS Galatea to 1865. He came home to Summit County and married Margaret Dailey in 1871. Their first son was born at Cleveland and the rest at Cuyahoga Falls, where he worked as a house painter.

Margaret died between 1883 and 1886. By then he was running stationary engines. On 9 October 1886, a widower, he applied to place his sons William and George Edward in the Ohio Soldiers' and Sailors' Orphans' Home at Xenia, the state home for the children of Union veterans. He followed them there. In 1890 he was living on the home's grounds, and in 1891 he applied for his daughter Fannie, as Geo. M. Patterson of Xenia.

In 1900 he was a widowed painter of fifty four in Fannie's house outside Xenia. On 31 July 1916 he entered the national soldiers' home at Dayton, described in its register as five feet ten, fair, with blue eyes and gray hair. Fannie, his next of kin, died five weeks later. He died at the home on 6 May 1917, and his effects of $14.50 went to his son George Edward at St. Joseph, Missouri. He lies in Dayton National Cemetery.
