Mary Tilson
Mary Tilson married James Cole the younger, of Plymouth, at Scituate on 23 December 1652, and the record of that day is very nearly everything known about her. Her first child, Mary, was born at Scituate in December 1653. Her son John, born 16 March 1660, is the man who settled at Plympton and married Susannah Gray. Her birth, her death and her burial are not recorded.
Her husband married a second wife, Abigail Davenport, at a date not recorded. So the year of Mary Tilson's death is unknown, and so is the question of how many of the eight children listed for him were hers. The two eldest, born in 1653 and 1660, are certainly hers by date.
Her father is not established. Savage records an Edward Tilson at Scituate who died in 1660, and thought he might be the same man as the Edmund Tilson recorded at Plymouth in 1643. He lists three Tilson women marrying out of that household in the 1650s and 1660s. Elizabeth and Mary Tilson married Dunham brothers of Eastham on 25 October 1660, and Jane Tilson married Giles Richard the elder on 20 May 1662. Which of them was which he declined to say, and of this Mary he wrote: "but wh. was the Mary, that m. 23 Dec 1652, James Cole jr. is quite beyond my conject."
