Mary Worley
Mary Worley was the wife of John Worley, a farmer of Sandy Township in Stark County, Ohio, who died in the winter of 1817 to 1818. A Worley genealogy typed in 1941 and a family sheet of 1983 give her maiden name as Springer. No record names her father. Her gravestone says she died aged 81, which puts her birth about 1761.
She was with John in Washington County, Pennsylvania, in the 1790s, where their son Akey was born in 1797. After the War of 1812 the family moved to Stark County, Ohio. She was probably the mother of all ten children named in his will. The eldest, Thomas, was born in 1781, and the youngest, Jacob, in 1805.
John's will of 16 December 1817 calls her "my dear and beloved wife Mary." He left her "her bed and beding the large bay mare two of the cows all the Household and Kitchen furniture." She was to have the management and profits of the home farm "during her natural Life provided she shall so long continue my widow," and she was to maintain the children who were not yet of age. The farm was to pass to Jacob "after the desease or marriage of my wife Mary." At the sale of John's goods in 1818 she bought back hogs, sheep, a saddle and spoons.
She died a widow in Canton Township, before 3 January 1842. On that day the administrator, Alfred Hanford, sold "the goods and chattels belonging to the estate of Mary Worley late of Canton Township Stark County deceased" at public vendue. Her sons Joseph, Jacob and Michael Worley were among the buyers. So were her daughter Catherine's husband, Matthias Firestone, her son-in-law Jacob Need, many times over, and her daughter "Nancy Need," twice. Hanford swore to the sale list on 4 and 9 March 1842.
One memorial gives her death as 1 July 1842 and her burial at Melscheimer Cemetery, under a stone reading "81y. W/o John Worley." Her goods were sold six months before that date, so she died earlier, probably in 1841.
