Nancy Worley

b. 1804 · Pennsylvania → Rose Township OH → Jefferson Township, Owen County, Indiana
Born 1804, Pennsylvania

Nancy Worley was born in Pennsylvania about 1804 and was the wife of Jacob Need. She bore twelve children that the census of 1850 could count, all of them in Ohio, the eldest about 1822 and the youngest about 1846. She was forty six when the enumerator came to Rose Township in Carroll County and fifty six when another found the family in Jefferson Township, Owen County, Indiana, ten years and one state later.

She was a daughter of John and Mary Worley of Sandy Township, Stark County, Ohio. Her father's will, made on 16 December 1817, divides his livestock "among my Daughters Mary Rebecca Catharine and Nancy," and leaves each of them "one bed and bed cloaths the same that was made for each of them and known by each." When the appraisers came in April 1818 they listed "One ditto said Nancy's" among the beds. At the sale of his goods the copper tea kettle went to "Nancy Worley." She was about fourteen and still at home. Her brother Akey had been born in Washington County, Pennsylvania, in 1797, so the family came to Ohio from the same corner of Pennsylvania as the Needs.

Her father left the farm to her mother for as long as she stayed a widow. Her mother died about 1841, and on 3 January 1842 her goods were sold in Canton Township. Among the buyers were Nancy's brothers Joseph, Jacob and Michael Worley, her sister Catherine's husband Matthias Firestone, Jacob Need again and again, and "Nancy Need" twice.

Her husband's father had given him a quarter section in Stark County on Christmas Day 1824, a few years into the marriage. In April 1839 she and Jacob sold it for $2,200, and she made her mark on the deed. In 1854 they sold another 70 acres in Carroll County before leaving for Indiana.

Her maiden name comes from her daughter Matilda. In October 1886 Matilda, then Matilda Freeze, married Moses F. Beasley in Sullivan County, Indiana. She was sixty two and it was her third marriage. The county's marriage return asked for the bride's father's name and her mother's maiden name, and the answers were written in as Jacob Need and "Nancy Worly."

Her brother Akey Worley kept a hotel at Morges, in Rose Township, the township where Jacob and Nancy farmed in 1850. A county history of 1921 says of his family that the great-grandfather had "conducted a hotel at Morges, Rose Township, after he came to Carroll County from Pennsylvania." Her marriage to Jacob, about 1821, has not been found.

A family sheet typed in 1983 calls her a daughter of John and Mary (Springer) Worley and says she married Jacob in Harrison or Stark County about 1821. It gives no source, and its compiler later crossed it out, but her father's will and the two estate sales bear out the parents. Her mother's maiden name, Springer, rests on that sheet and on a Worley genealogy typed in 1941.
